Building on over 50 years of influential scholarship in water science, policy, and governance, Water International, IWRA’s highly-respected peer-reviewed journal, is beginning another chapter in its long history with a change in editorial leadership.
Following the appointment by IWRA’s Executive Board, we are pleased to welcome Raya Marina Stephan as the new Editor-in-Chief of Water International. Having served as Deputy Editor-in-Chief since 2018, Raya brings strong editorial experience, continuity, and a clear vision for the journal’s future. As an international water law expert with extensive experience in the legal and institutional aspects of water management and transboundary waters, Raya has a firm grasp on the wide variety of issues in the water sector.
We also warmly welcome Philippus (Flip) Wester as the new Deputy Editor-in-Chief. With more than 30 years of experience in water governance research, peer-reviewed scholarship, and science–policy dialogue, Flip further strengthens the journal’s editorial leadership and commitment to interdisciplinary exchange. He previously served as Water International’s Deputy Editor-in-Chief from 2013 to 2017 so is well-acquainted with the journal.
After nearly 20 years as Editor-in-Chief of Water International, James E. Nickum is taking a well-deserved break from his duties. His leadership and long-standing commitment have played a key role in shaping Water International into the respected global platform it is today. We are deeply grateful for his contributions to the journal and to the global water community and wish him well in his future endeavours.
Established in 1975, the Water International publishes original research, reviews, technical notes, and thematic special issues addressing water challenges across diverse geographic and institutional contexts.
It serves a global audience of researchers, policymakers, and practitioners engaged in advancing water knowledge and practice.
With new editorial leadership, Water International looks ahead with a renewed commitment to quality, relevance, and real-world impact.
Thank you for your continued support of Water International.
