Countries across the Mediterranean basin experience distinct realities in terms of water availability, quality, management and governance. Yet, all face a growing need to adapt to increasing water scarcity across the region.
What is being done to develop more integrated and resilient approaches to water management across the basin? And how are cooperative efforts contributing to greater water security in the region?
To build a deeper understanding of this evolving water landscape, the IWRA and Plan Bleu are running a two-part webinar series: ‘The Mediterranean Basin Under Pressure’.
Part 2: Adaptations and Solutions
The second and final session of the series builds on the first webinar by shifting the focus from the current state of Mediterranean water resources to how the region is adapting to increasing water scarcity.
The moderator will start with a brief summary of the key conclusions ‘Part 1: An Assessment of Current Conditions’, which explored contrasting realities and shared priorities across the basin.
Our panel discussion will then examine how integrated action can strengthen water security in the Mediterranean by showcasing a range of approaches and solutions, from unconventional water resources and nature-based solutions to the use of AI in designing adaptation strategies.
Finally, the session will draw together the main conclusions from both webinars and place them in the context of the upcoming Euro-Mediterranean Water Forum (30 September–2 October 2026).

About the webinar series
Spanning three continents and more than 20 countries, the Mediterranean basin is home to diverse landscapes, communities and water systems. Yet, pressure on increasingly scarce water resources is intensifying across the whole region.
While this scenario requires coordinated actions, there is also much to learn from the solutions and approaches already taking place across the Mediterranean.
This September, IWRA and Plan Bleu are bringing these perspectives together through a two-part webinar series: ‘The Mediterranean Basin Under Pressure’. The series examines the current state of Mediterranean water resources, the pressures shaping their future, and potential adaptation solutions.
