Background

Across the Mediterranean, water tells very different stories. While countries and communities share the same sea, they face distinct realities in terms of water availability, quality, management and governance — realities that are becoming increasingly complex under a changing climate.

Drawing on key data and indicators from the Plan Bleu Observatory, this webinar series, ‘The Mediterranean Basin Under Pressure,’ takes a journey across the Mediterranean basin, exploring the contrasts between its northern and southern shores and the pressures shaping their water futures.

Beyond understanding these differences, the series brings perspectives together to explore shared challenges, common priorities and collective pathways towards a more water-resilient Mediterranean.

Series Overview

Co-organised by IWRA and Plan Bleu, the series aims to build a deeper understanding of the conditions shaping water resources across the Mediterranean basin.  In doing so, it also promotes technical exchange and highlights regional progress towards more effective and efficient water governance.

Part 1: ‘An Assessment of Current Conditions’ provides an in-depth assessment of the water landscape across the basin. Bringing together key figures, trends and regional characteristics, the session will examine the current situation and emerging priorities for Mediterranean water resources.

Part 2: ‘Adaptations and Solutions’ focuses on adaptation to increasing water scarcity. Building on insights from Part 1, the session explores the need for integrated action to address water insecurity and showcases a range of solutions. It will close with the main conclusions from both webinars in the context of the upcoming Euro-Mediterranean Water Forum (30 September-2 October 2026).
