The Mediterranean Basin Under Pressure: An Assessment of Current Conditions
Thursday 3 September 2026 | 14:00-15:30 CEST | Online (Zoom) | Webinar no. 84
Background
From rising temperature and more frequent weather events to population growth, economic and agricultural activities, and tourism, water resources in the Mediterranean basin are under unprecedented pressure.
A set of challenges underscores the urgent need for cooperative approaches to water governance. Understanding key figures, stress indicators, and regional differences are important to develop more integrated, resilient water management solutions.
To build a deeper understanding of this evolving water landscape and highlight effective approaches to water governance across the region, the IWRA and Plan Bleu are running a two-part webinar series: ‘The Mediterranean Basin Under Pressure’.
Part 1: An Assessment of Current Conditions
Drawing on insights from the Plan Bleu Regional Observatory, the session analyses the factors and conditions shaping water resources across the Mediterranean basin. It provides key figures, trends and regional characteristics to build a clearer picture of the region’s current water situation.
Additionally, the webinar showcases how water realities differ between the northern and southern Mediterranean, while taking a closer look at the challenges facing individual watersheds and communities.
Together, these perspectives will help identify shared water priorities for the Mediterranean’s future.

About the webinar series
Spanning three continents and more than 20 countries, the Mediterranean basin is home to diverse landscapes, communities and water systems. Yet, pressure on increasingly scarce water resources is intensifying across the whole region.
While this scenario requires coordinated actions, there is also much to learn from the solutions and approaches already taking place across the Mediterranean.
This September, IWRA and Plan Bleu are bringing these perspectives together through a two-part webinar series: ‘The Mediterranean Basin Under Pressure’. The series examines the current state of Mediterranean water resources, the pressures shaping their future, and potential adaptation solutions.
