IWRA Launches its New Strategy 2030!
Shaping the next chapter of the Association and the global water’s community

The International Water Resources Association (IWRA) is pleased to announce the launch of its IWRA Strategy 2030, setting out the Association’s new direction and priorities for the next five years.
Developed through an extensive consultation process with members and wider water community, the IWRA Strategy 2030 reflects both what IWRA has built over more than five decades since its establishment in 1971 and where the Association is heading next.
At the centre of Strategy 2030 is IWRA’s longstanding focus: connecting water science with policy. Building on this foundation, the Strategy provides a framework for strengthening IWRA’s work and increasing its impact across the global water sector and beyond.
A renewed Vision and Mission
The IWRA Strategy 2030 introduces a renewed Vision for the future the Association is working towards:
A water-secure world where science and policy are integrated for the benefit of people and the environment.
Alongside this Vision, our renewed Mission defines how IWRA is taking steps towards its achievement: advancing water knowledge, strengthening connections between science and policy, supporting our members and partners, and bringing together a diverse, cross-disciplinary global community.
Five strategic goals towards 2030
Turning this Vision and Mission into action requires clear priorities. Strategy 2030 identifies five interconnected goals that will focus IWRA’s efforts over the next five years:
- Create greater value for IWRA members
Placing members at the heart of IWRA’s work, with more opportunities to lead and participate in activities, develop professionally, and gain recognition for their work and achievements. - Be strategic in our choice of partners
Focusing on partnerships and alliances that bring clear value to IWRA and its community, extend our reach and impact, and open new opportunities for collaboration. - Deliver organisational outcomes through priority activities
Concentrating our efforts where IWRA can make the greatest impact, from Congresses and knowledge products to networking, information services, training and capacity building. - Secure IWRA’s long-term financial sustainability
Building a stronger and more resilient organisation by diversifying revenue, strengthening our financial foundations and ensuring resources are used effectively. - Enhance IWRA’s global standing and reputation
Strengthening IWRA’s role as a global platform for water science and policy, increasing the reach and influence of our work, and helping bring greater attention to water issues worldwide.
From Strategy to action
With IWRA’s Strategy 2030 in place, implementation is now underway. A three-year rolling Implementation Roadmap, updated annually, translates the Strategy’s goals into concrete actions by setting out the priorities, resources and collaborations needed to support its delivery.
Its launch also marks another step in a broader evolution for IWRA. Together with the Association’s new visual identity, redesigned website and enhanced membership experience, the IWRA Strategy 2030 brings a clear strategic direction to this next chapter.
This new strategy has been shaped by IWRA’s community, and that community will remain central to what comes next. As the Strategy moves forward, it creates new opportunities to connect, collaborate and contribute – working together towards a more water-secure world.
