SUMMARY:IWA Water and Development Congress & Exhibition 2019
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable solutions for emerging economies To achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal 6 of ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all\, will require a massive effort by the water and sanitation practitioners\, especially those in low and middle income countries. We are beyond a simple model of expanded investment in infrastructure\, there are numerous challenges and they are linked in often complex ways. For example\, progress in the sector is significantly hampered by an overall shortage of appropriately skilled people in the workforce. IWA has published a preliminary analysis from 15 countries in 2014. Developing and emerging economies have made efforts to cope with the challenges\, training\, establishing competency frameworks\, organizational development and implementing institutional frameworks. This is only one issue for which the fifth Water and Development Congress & Exhibition in Colombo\, Sri Lanka creates an opportunity to share\, mutually reinforce and accelerate work in progress.

SUMMARY:30th Course in Climate Time Series and Risk Analysis
DESCRIPTION:This Course in Climate Time Series and Risk Analysis is specifically tailored to the needs of PhD students and postdocs\, who wish to learn about an important combination of disciplines (climate change\, time series analysis\, and risk analysis)\, but have had so far not much exposure to in-depth statistical teaching. It will also attract professional researchers\, who wish to update their knowledge or to learn new statistical techniques. We assume that participants come from somewhere in the range of climatology\, ecology\, econometrics\, environmental sciences\, geosciences\, hydrology\, meteorology\, or physics. \nWhat distinguishes this from our previous courses: it puts more weight on risk analysis of climate extremes. This is reflected by new material from an upcoming book on climate extremes by Manfred Mudelsee. \nA significant part of the course part is devoted to training in “Open Sessions”\, where we recapitulate concepts\, answer basic and advanced questions\, do exercises\, discuss applications and devote time to in-depth analyses of your own data. \nWe just assume that do not run away when you see a mathematical formula: all the basics\, and the advanced methods as well\, you will learn here. You get the required statistical tools and extensive hands-on training to become able to optimally analyse your data and answer the associated questions about the climate. You acquire the theoretical basis for understanding the tools and interpreting the results. You learn to quantify the various sources of uncertainty in data\, climate models and statistical estimation. \nClimate case studies serve to illustrate the usefulness of the tools: how to make the most of your data by means of statistics—and how to publish it in a thesis or a research paper. Examples include: \n\nTrend estimation techniques for the quantification of global warming (Mudelsee 2019 Earth Science Reviews 190:310)\nModelled river runoff and river floods during the past decades and centuries (Mudelsee et al. 2003 Nature 425:166\, St. George and Mudelsee 2019 Journal of Flood Risk Management)\nPaleohurricane risk during the past millennium from proxy series (Besonen et al. 2008 Geophysical Research Letters 35:L14705)\n\nThe course instructor\, Dr. Manfred Mudelsee\, trained in physics\, geology and statistics\, has a long-standing expertise in teaching statistical methods to non-specialists. \nWhat you get. The course consists of lectures and extensive hands-on training in computer tutorials. Data\, software\, the lecture as PDF\, the statistical tools and a printed copy of the textbook (Mudelsee\, 2014\, Climate Time Series Analysis\, 2nd edition\, Springer\, 454 pp) are included in the fee. You get the link to the course PDF already one week before the start to optimally prepare yourself. During the course\, you also get new material from the upcoming book (Mudelsee\, 2020\, Statistical Analysis of Climate Extremes\, Cambridge University Press\, in press). After the course\, you are offered a one-month period where you may receive support on the software and general statistical advice. \nParticipants are strongly encouraged to bring their own data for discussion and analysis during the course. The number of participants is limited to eight to allow in-depth individual consultation with the course holder and textbook author\, Manfred Mudelsee. \nAn ice-breaker meal\, a course dinner\, daily lunch\, snacks\, coffee and tea are included: high-quality organic and\, upon request\, also vegan or vegetarian. A shuttle service to/from the railway station and your accomodation in Bad Gandersheim is also covered by the registration fee. \nParticipants of past courses have praised the intellectual\, co-operative atmosphere during the courses\, the family-like setting and the nice rural landscape around here: please see their comments below. Heckenbeck is a little village of high ecological awareness\, which belongs to the medieval town of Bad Gandersheim. \nThe new lecture house\, without barriers\, has opened in summer 2015. \nPast participants: country list\nAustralia\, Austria\, Bangladesh\, Belgium\, Brazil\, Canada\, Chile\, Croatia\, Czech Republic\, Denmark\, Finland\, France\, Germany\, Indonesia\, Ireland\, Italy\, Latvia\, Nepal\, Netherlands\, Nigeria\, Norway\, Poland\, Portugal\, South Korea\, Spain\, Switzerland\, UK\, USA

SUMMARY:Workshop on "Water Demand Under Extreme Events: Implications for Cities"
DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Water Policy\, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy\, National University of Singapore\, and the International Journal of Water Resources Development are organising a workshop on “Water demand under extreme hydrological events: Implications for cities”\, 23-24 March 2020 in Singapore. \nImpacts of extreme hydrological events\, including floods\, droughts\, typhoons and hurricanes\, are increasing all over the world. They are affecting human security and welfare and impacting upon the functional integrity of cities in terms of their increasing unpredictability. Flooding and related events are short-lived and difficult to predict both temporally and in terms of their spatial focus\, whereas droughts may be multi-year events that intensify through time. They are also testing our ability to reliably forecast and manage them. \nExtreme hydrological events are multifaceted phenomena and are challenging the current planning\, management and adaptive capacities of cities in both the developed and developing world. The numerous interconnected issues for managing such events in cost-effective and socially-acceptable forms are impacting not only upon water institutions\, but also upon city planning ones. This has made the process to understand\, predict and manage them exceedingly complex. Furthermore\, effective communication with the general public to reach a common social understanding of how much risk may be socially acceptable so that implementable policy decisions are taken has become extremely complex as well. \nThe focus of this 2-day workshop will include\, but will not be limited to\, discussions on the following topics\, especially in terms of planning\, policy\, management\, governance implications\, implementation constraints and lessons learnt\, both positive and negative: \n• Urban water governance practices and processes for managing current and future extreme hydrological events.\n• Vulnerability of current water supply\, wastewater and stormwater management under extreme conditions and preparedness and disaster warning systems for such systems.\n• Case studies of cities affected by extreme hydrological events as to what have been their short- and long-term water-management strategies\, including what has worked\, what has not worked and the reasons thereof.\n• Social\, economic\, institutional\, political and environmental implications of the policy and management decisions taken.\n• Communication practices with stakeholders and policymakers\, how they worked and reasons thereof. \nThe workshop will include a special discussion session on future research agendas to inform policymaking. \nExtended abstracts (1-2 pages) for possible presentation at the workshop should be sent by 20 November to Dr. Cecilia Tortajada\, emails: Cecilia.tortajada@nus.edu.sg and Cecilia.tortajada@gmail.com \nAuthors will be informed on whether their abstract is considered suitable for presentation at the workshop by 10 December. Draft papers (minimum 5000 words) should be submitted by 15 February 2020 for discussion during the workshop. \nAuthors should finalise their papers in light of the discussions by 30 June 2020. These will be peer-reviewed for possible publication in the International Journal of Water Resources Development\, www.tandfonline.com/loi/cijw20 \nTravel and hotel expenses of selected participants will be covered by the workshop organisers.

SUMMARY:WaterVent - Corporate Venturing Forum in the Water Tech Nexus
DESCRIPTION:WaterVent can be perceived as a Corporate Venturing Forum in the water tech nexus. water technology innovators have to cope with two main challenges: \n\nI. funding (by VC\, corporates\, charities & foundations\, Family Offices\, private individuals\, public grants & loans)\nII. detecting and convincing (first) Clients (application references!) – industrial corporates\, farmers\, real estate owners and utilities which are open minded (courageous?) to give new and – often – disruptive technologies a trial\n\nWaterVent is a platform dedicated to matching innovators and these two groups by showcasting water technology innovations to those who are in need of and/or who want to engage in.

SUMMARY:IWRA Webinar on Sustainability of Engineered Rivers in Arid Lands: Challenge and Response
DESCRIPTION:Invitation – New IWRA Webinar onSustainability of Engineered Rivers in Arid Lands: Challenge and ResponseWednesday\, September 23rd 2020From 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm CET \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick here to register for free! \n\n\n\nIWRA’s next webinar will introduce participants to major river systems that typically originate in mountains and flow through arid or semi-arid climates downstream.    For millennia\, spring floods have deposited fertile soil here\, which together with diversions from the rivers’ flows have enabled extensive irrigated agriculture.  These downstream areas form the backbone of regional economies and world food production. Engineering works in these river systems\, notably reservoirs built over the last 120 years\, have increased year-round water supply for food production and for growing cities. Yet today\, climate change\, reservoir sedimentation\, depletion of groundwater and reduced environmental flows challenge the sustainability of these river systems. This webinar addresses the above concerns and looks at possible responses. \n\n\n\nThe theme of this webinar was that of a multiyear project\, Sustainability of Engineered Rivers in Arid Lands (SERIDAS)\, introduced in Water International by Aysegül Kibaroglu\, Jurgen Schmandt and George Ward in the article entitled “Engineered Rivers in Arid Lands: Searching for Sustainability in Theory and Practice” (42.3\, 241-253).  The full results of the project will appear shortly in a book published by Cambridge University Press. \n\n\n\nParticipation is free and open to all.  Audience questions are encouraged. \n\n\n\nTopics \n\n\n\n\nEngineered Rivers in Arid Regions: Challenge and Response\nThe Global Climate Change and Engineered Rivers\nThe Depletion of Groundwater and Preserving Environmental Flows\nTensions and Dynamics in the Nile River Basin\nChallenges and Responses in the Murray-Darling Basin\n\n\n\n\nModerator: James E. SUMMARY:2nd Asia International Water Week - AIWW
DESCRIPTION:The AIWW is a triennial water gathering for multi-stakeholders to seek tangible implementation for resolving Asian water problems. It is organized by the Asia Water Council in collaboration with the authorities of the host country. Regional water problems that were discussed for three years prior to the AIWW based on the preparatory process will be raised as the primary issues from Asian water community and will be disseminated to the global water community with action plans to solve them and timelines for them by the relevant committee at the AIWW. The tangible plans to implement solutions by each committee will be particularly highlighted by organizing the sessions on the pertinent topics. Designing the future plans for collected action plans will be the core part of the gathering in the AIWW. Members and prospective members of the AWC including water related stakeholders and preeminent experts are gathered in the AIWW and share their insights and experiences to support and develop the activities of the AWC so that it consequently contribute to pave the way towards sustainable development in Asia. As the AIWW is held one year prior to the World Water Forum\, opportunities to organize the major gathering for the preparatory process for the World Water Forum will be provided to the AWC members and the follow up actions will also be continued at the World Water Forum. \n  \nThe Road to Bali 2020 \n
