SUMMARY:24th ICID International Congress & 71st IEC Meeting
DESCRIPTION:ICID has been organising its flagship triennial event International Congress on Irrigation and Drainage since 1951.  The 1st ICID Congress was held in 1951 at Delhi and so far ICID has held 23 Triennial Congresses\, the most recent 23rd ICID Congress being held in Mexico City in October 2017. The list of questions addressed by the Congresses clearly indicates a progressive shift from purely technical questions to sustainability of irrigation and global water and food security issues. For example\, questions for the second Congress (1954) were the problems of freeboard in irrigation canals\, the maintenance of irrigation canals with special reference to weed control and safe yields and recharge of groundwater. At the 5th Congress (1963) the question of economics and financing of irrigation and flood control works and rehabilitation and modernisation of irrigation and drainage systems appeared at the 11th Congress in Grenoble in 1981. The effect of irrigation and drainage was introduced at the 14th Congress in Rio (1990). Water management and institutional aspects were introduced at the 15th Congress in The Hague in 1993.  Sustainability of irrigation and farmer participation were the two questions of the 16th Congress in Cairo (1996) and at the 18th Congress in Montreal (2003) the questions of food production under water scarcity\, poverty alleviation and environmental challenges.

SUMMARY:46th IAH Congress: Groundwater management and governance – coping with water scarcity
DESCRIPTION:Groundwater management and governance – water scarcity. The IAH Spanish Chapter (IAH-GE) and the Center of Hydrogeology of the University of Malaga (CEHIUMA) are honored to host and invite you to the 46th IAH Congress in Malaga\, Spain in 2019. \nStudies on groundwater sustainability show that aquifers across the world are undergoing severe and unsustainable groundwater depletion. The Mediterranean is likely to be one of the most endangered regions\, with climatic models also predicting that there will be severe drought events and significant reduction of water availability. Appropriate management and governance of water resources are needed to adapt to such critical scenarios and cope with their consequences. The conference will examine this under 8 topics: \n• Groundwater management and governance\n• Groundwater and climate change\n• Groundwater sustainability\n• Groundwater footprint and virtual water\n• Tools\, methods and models to study groundwater\n• Groundwater\, wetlands and natural heritage\n• Groundwater and socio-economic development in Latin America\n• Groundwater quality and pollution processes \nKey dates:\n– Abstract submission by 19 March 2019\n– Early bird registration fees available before 30 June 2019.

SUMMARY:Water Security and Climate Change Conference
DESCRIPTION:Scientists\, policy makers and stakeholders from various sectors discuss the diverse facets of water security and its relation to climate variability and change. \nThe availability of water affects many of mankind’s social and economic actions and is an essential component of ecosystems. Hence\, water security is one of the major challenges faced by society today\, on both a global and local level. Additionally\, impacts of climate change and water-related hazards are increasingly decisive for food security\, well-being\, poverty\, conflict or peace and have become a key component of social development. \nWater security as well as climate change are cross-cutting elements of recent global agreements\, such as the Sustainable Development Goals\, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. Science should and can play an important role in contributing to the achievement of these goals.\nThe Water Security and Climate Change Conference (WSCC) strives to go beyond science and build bridges between various disciplines and sectors as well as different groups of stakeholders. Serving as a platform for discussions about water and food secure societies\, by providing a stimulating environment with the intention of yielding innovative ideas and grounds for implementation\, the WSCC is continuing a series of successful conferences in Bangkok\, Cologne and Nairobi. \nIn 2019\, WSCC is convened by the Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí on behalf of the Exceed network\, which consists of more than 90 universities worldwide.

SUMMARY:IWA Water and Development Congress & Exhibition 2019
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable solutions for emerging economies To achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal 6 of ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all\, will require a massive effort by the water and sanitation practitioners\, especially those in low and middle income countries. We are beyond a simple model of expanded investment in infrastructure\, there are numerous challenges and they are linked in often complex ways. For example\, progress in the sector is significantly hampered by an overall shortage of appropriately skilled people in the workforce. IWA has published a preliminary analysis from 15 countries in 2014. Developing and emerging economies have made efforts to cope with the challenges\, training\, establishing competency frameworks\, organizational development and implementing institutional frameworks. This is only one issue for which the fifth Water and Development Congress & Exhibition in Colombo\, Sri Lanka creates an opportunity to share\, mutually reinforce and accelerate work in progress.

SUMMARY:30th Course in Climate Time Series and Risk Analysis
DESCRIPTION:This Course in Climate Time Series and Risk Analysis is specifically tailored to the needs of PhD students and postdocs\, who wish to learn about an important combination of disciplines (climate change\, time series analysis\, and risk analysis)\, but have had so far not much exposure to in-depth statistical teaching. It will also attract professional researchers\, who wish to update their knowledge or to learn new statistical techniques. We assume that participants come from somewhere in the range of climatology\, ecology\, econometrics\, environmental sciences\, geosciences\, hydrology\, meteorology\, or physics. \nWhat distinguishes this from our previous courses: it puts more weight on risk analysis of climate extremes. This is reflected by new material from an upcoming book on climate extremes by Manfred Mudelsee. \nA significant part of the course part is devoted to training in “Open Sessions”\, where we recapitulate concepts\, answer basic and advanced questions\, do exercises\, discuss applications and devote time to in-depth analyses of your own data. \nWe just assume that do not run away when you see a mathematical formula: all the basics\, and the advanced methods as well\, you will learn here. You get the required statistical tools and extensive hands-on training to become able to optimally analyse your data and answer the associated questions about the climate. You acquire the theoretical basis for understanding the tools and interpreting the results. You learn to quantify the various sources of uncertainty in data\, climate models and statistical estimation. \nClimate case studies serve to illustrate the usefulness of the tools: how to make the most of your data by means of statistics—and how to publish it in a thesis or a research paper. Examples include: \n\nTrend estimation techniques for the quantification of global warming (Mudelsee 2019 Earth Science Reviews 190:310)\nModelled river runoff and river floods during the past decades and centuries (Mudelsee et al. 2003 Nature 425:166\, St. George and Mudelsee 2019 Journal of Flood Risk Management)\nPaleohurricane risk during the past millennium from proxy series (Besonen et al. 2008 Geophysical Research Letters 35:L14705)\n\nThe course instructor\, Dr. Manfred Mudelsee\, trained in physics\, geology and statistics\, has a long-standing expertise in teaching statistical methods to non-specialists. \nWhat you get. The course consists of lectures and extensive hands-on training in computer tutorials. Data\, software\, the lecture as PDF\, the statistical tools and a printed copy of the textbook (Mudelsee\, 2014\, Climate Time Series Analysis\, 2nd edition\, Springer\, 454 pp) are included in the fee. You get the link to the course PDF already one week before the start to optimally prepare yourself. During the course\, you also get new material from the upcoming book (Mudelsee\, 2020\, Statistical Analysis of Climate Extremes\, Cambridge University Press\, in press). After the course\, you are offered a one-month period where you may receive support on the software and general statistical advice. \nParticipants are strongly encouraged to bring their own data for discussion and analysis during the course. The number of participants is limited to eight to allow in-depth individual consultation with the course holder and textbook author\, Manfred Mudelsee. \nAn ice-breaker meal\, a course dinner\, daily lunch\, snacks\, coffee and tea are included: high-quality organic and\, upon request\, also vegan or vegetarian. A shuttle service to/from the railway station and your accomodation in Bad Gandersheim is also covered by the registration fee. \nParticipants of past courses have praised the intellectual\, co-operative atmosphere during the courses\, the family-like setting and the nice rural landscape around here: please see their comments below. Heckenbeck is a little village of high ecological awareness\, which belongs to the medieval town of Bad Gandersheim. \nThe new lecture house\, without barriers\, has opened in summer 2015. \nPast participants: country list\nAustralia\, Austria\, Bangladesh\, Belgium\, Brazil\, Canada\, Chile\, Croatia\, Czech Republic\, Denmark\, Finland\, France\, Germany\, Indonesia\, Ireland\, Italy\, Latvia\, Nepal\, Netherlands\, Nigeria\, Norway\, Poland\, Portugal\, South Korea\, Spain\, Switzerland\, UK\, USA

SUMMARY:ICID 5th African Regional Conference on Irrigation & Drainage
DESCRIPTION:ICID does not limit its activities to global arena only; its focus permeates to regional level too.  ICID organizes Regional Conferences on themes of interest to its members in a particular region.  These Regional Conferences\, viz. Asian Regional Conference\, European Regional Conference\, African Regional Conference and Pan-American Regional Conference provide a common platform to countries in these regions to address the issues and problems specific to that particular region.  The Regional Conferences are generally organized alongside an IEC but can well be a standalone event. \nTo focus on exchange of latest technical know-how and developments in the drainage sector\, ICID’s African Regional Working Group (AFRWG) organizes conferences in chosen countries.  So far 4 African Regional Conferences have been held addressing issues related to African issues.
