SUMMARY:IWRA Webinar on Groundwater Success Stories
DESCRIPTION:Invitation – Upcoming Webinar Series on Groundwater Success Stories\nWebinar #1\nThe Importance of Groundwater Success Stories\nWednesday\, June 30th 2021\nFrom 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm CET\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick here to register for free! \nGroundwater is not only a story of over-exploitation\, depletion\, and negative impacts. There are locations in which groundwater is managed successfully and problems solved with mastery. Success comes in many forms – ranging from small steps or changes that set the stage for future gains to larger transformations within the groundwater system.  These successes may result in improved management\, governance\, or physical outcomes. \nBetween June 2021 and March 2022\, the IWRA Groundwater Task Force will sponsor a series of bi-monthly webinars\, each of which presents and reflects on differing aspects of success. Reviewing examples of successes can contribute to increasing the visibility and examining transferability of success to other locations.  Please join us in exploring and learning about these fascinating and transferable examples. \nDo you have a success story to share or know of one that merits recognition?  Would you like to be involved in the webinar series?  The IWRA Groundwater Task Force wants to hear from you.  Please submit your suggestions via this online survey. \nTopics include:  \n\nGroundwater – An Invisible\, Yet Essential Resource. Although a major global source of water\, groundwater is ‘out of mind’ for most people.  Knowledge of the prevalence\, importances\, and key characteristics of groundwater is critical for its protection.\nSuccess Story – The Azraq Oasis in the Eastern Badia of Jordan. In the 1990’s\,  over-exploitation of groundwater caused the Oasis to completely dry up. With extensive rehabilitation efforts\, including reductions in groundwater abstraction and pumping water back to the Oasis\, the wetland rejuvenated and birds and wildlife returned.\nSuccess Story – Groundwater Management in the Netherlands.  The Netherlands has long adopted a multi-faceted approach to the management of groundwater. Notable strategies have included large-scale application of managed aquifer recharge for public water supply and implementation of groundwater policies and legislation to manage and protect underground water resources.\n\nModerated by: Anita Milman\, Professor\, University of Massachusetts Amherst\, United States \n Distinguished Panellists \n\nSusan Kilani\, Specialist and Trainer\, Water Quality Management\, Jordan\n\n\nNeno Kukurić\, Director\, UNESCO\, International Groundwater Resources Assessment Centre (IGRAC)\, the Netherlands\nGeert-Jan Nijsten\, Senior Advisor\, Deltares Institute for Applied Research on Water\, the Netherlands\n\nPresented by: Scott McKenzie\, Ph.D. Candidate\, University of British Columbia\, Canada \nThe webinar will feature time for audience engagement and questions. Participation is free and open to all.  \nClick here to register for free  \nWe look forward to your participation and a fruitful debate!
