AM6. AWM IN OVERCOMING TRADE-OFF BETWEEN HUMAN AND ENVIRONMENTAL WATER NEEDS

The session will be organized by the Global Water Needs Initiative (GWNI) of the Global Water System Project. Global water needs are defined as the requirements of water of a certain quantity, quality and distribution for different uses to sustain a certain state of a social-ecological system. The desired state must be defined through a legitimate and accountable process engaging major societal stakeholders. The session will analyse reasons for the (seeming) conflict between human and ecosystem water needs, elaborate on the role of freshwater ecosystem goods and services and adaptive governance and management approaches for harmonising water needs of humans and nature to overcome the perceived trade-offs.
