IWRM has been the prevailing and dominant paradigm of water management in the past decade. Adaptive water management has been advocated as a timely and urgently needed extension of the IWRM approach to take into account complexity and uncertainty. Some scholars have even introduced the notion of adaptive co-management to highlight the combination of the tradition of co-management emphasizing participatory approaches and adaptive management emphasizing complexity and experimental approaches to management. Will a new management approach emerge - IAWRCM Integrated and Adaptive Water Resources Co-Management? The session will address complementarities and differences between IWRM, Adaptive Water Management and Co-management and discuss if it might be useful to develop a more concise and consistent terminology for the variety of management approaches currently debated.
