GC2. AWM AND DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGES

Current demographic forecasts for global population project 9 billion people in 2050. The population of developed countries will remain more or less stable or even decrease while the growth will be significant in developing and emerging countries. These trends are particularly critical in regions where water challenges are already significant, such as rapidly growing urban areas, densely populated coastal and delta areas and the arid and sub-arid regions. Increasing economic activity and purchasing power in many developed and emerging countries will introduce high-standard water demand, not only for the basic needs, but also for sport, leisure and tourism activities. This session will bring together papers on population growth challenges for water management.
