Abstract
The purpose of the paper is to present a review of water

supply systems management in Poland being the largest country among the new European Community members.

Water supply systems of the whole country were described in respect to : value of consumption per capita, water

resources, length of pipes per a consumer, percentage of water losses caused by leakages, other water losses,

materials used for given circumstances, age of water mains, energy required for pumping, number of flowmeters,

storage volume of the systems, most commonly reported reasons of pipe failures. Social and economical aspects

were also discussed based on dynamic of water pricing leading to a tremendous decrease in water consumption

after the transformation into the free market economy. Consequences of this decrease for increasing of water

detention time within the systems and finally deterioration of its quality were described. Some cases of water

standards violation were listed and the reasons explained.
Reliability of water supply subsystems such

as : water intakes, treatment and pumping stations, water mains and storage tanks were characterized by listing basic

reliability parameters for some systems for which the data were available. Differences in the values of these

parameters in different regions of the country were explained.
The paper presents a general picture of

water supply management. Methodologies used to predict parameters describing reliability of the system were each

time briefly described.
