IWRA would like to remind you about the upcoming deadline for its call to develop a mentored Water International Special Issue with papers written by early-career water professionals that are either co-authored with or supervised by senior water professionals.
Early-career water professionals are invited to submit an abstract, if you haven’t already done so, of their research by Friday, May 29th 2020 to apply for an exceptional publication opportunity with Water International. Through this mentorship programme, they will benefit from a valuable chance to work and network with established senior water professionals and experts.
Objectives of the Mentoring Initiative
The IWRA mentoring initiative is intended to identify, attract, and assist young and early-career scholars and water professionals. The objective of the programme is to guide these individuals in preparing articles to be published in the Association’s journal, Water International. The selection process will seek diverse participants, from developed and developing countries, representing a range of expertise.
The special issue, to appear in 2021, will endeavor to promote interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity. It will encourage integrated-systems approaches in water research, avoiding very specific and narrow topics. Of particular interest are innovations on policies, management, development, and technological development that look to the present as well as the future.
Each selected participant will be paired with a senior mentor who will help guide the paper as an advisor or, possibly, a coauthor.
Theme of Water International's Special Issue
In keeping with the above objectives, the special issue resulting from the mentoring effort will have as a theme, “Fresh perspectives and approaches by new water professionals to meeting challenges in the water sector”.
Who Are Considered Early-Career Professionals?
Early-career water professionals are academics, such as assistant professors or post-docs with no more than 5 years in a full-time academic position, or advanced post-graduate students; or professionals working in the water sector (utility, government or NGOs with at least a bachelor’s degree).
Candidates should be either 35 years of age or younger, or be able demonstrate that they have started their water-resources career within the past 5 years.
What Do Early-Career Professionals Need To Submit?
- An extended abstract, in English, of 3-4 pages providing adequate insight into the topic, thesis, and methodology being used.
- A complete, updated CV (no more than 3 pages)
- A cover letter describing the motivation for participating in this initiative together with the applicants’ career objectives.
How Can Someone Apply & Be Selected?

Submitted applications will be reviewed and selected by an IWRA committee, based on the following criteria:
- The paper adopts the integrated systems approach specified above
- The paper adheres to the special-issue theme
- The application demonstrates that the work-product has the potential to become a publishable article
- Final selection of a candidate will be contingent on identifying a suitable senior mentor.
Applicants are not required to be IWRA members, although membership is encouraged!
